Food carts [Mar. 20th, 2010|11:22 pm]

damnportlanders

[zeuspater]
So I know the food carts at 12th and Hawthorne are open late and the ones downtown are typically lunch only, but what about the food carts up on Alberta as well as the ones on Missippi? I already checked foodcartsportland.com but they don't seem too good about listing the typical hours for such food cart clusters. Also, any reccommendations of carts to try? (Aside from the Hawthorne ones that is, since I've already been to all of those).

April's coming... [Mar. 20th, 2010|11:02 pm]

[kengwen]

...and so I ask you, the obvious tax experts:
1) if my partner and I got an oregon state tax refund last year which this year has to be claimed as income on federal taxes, but we got the refund jointly and are filing federal singly (cause they don't recognize us jointly and all), are there rules about how it gets divided, or can we do it however we want (i.e. do we have to split it in half or can one of us take the whole thing?)?

2) net operating loss.  I'm familiar with this situation theoretically, but my free-file online folks are telling me it might apply to me because my income is less than my deductions, or something like that.  This is because my "income" has been student loans, which aren't considered income.  This online folks are telling me I can carry my net operating loss forward, reducing my tax liability next year (I could carry it back but I had no tax liability last year either; I will probably have a tax liability for 2010).
Does any of this make sense?  Do I actually have a net operating loss or am I confused?  Is it really an option for me to carry me NOL forward and reduce next year's tax liability?  That would be pretty sweet.  I generally don't think of the IRS as being that nice, you know.
thanks!

Has everyone heard of the pilot program Clean Energy Works Portland, in which you can have your home weatherized and the costs are loaned to you, you pay the loan back over 20 years with payments added to your utility bill.  Very helpful for those who are interested in weatherizing but don't have the capital to make it happen on their own.  I believe you still get all the pertinent tax credits etc.  Check it out:

Long Shot [Mar. 20th, 2010|09:51 pm]

[ph0enixinflight]
In the hopes that the karmic powers-that-be see fit to smile my way, I'm hoping to throw this out there and get a "hit." I lost a Nikkor lens along the Eastbank Esplanade today... I think about a mile south of OMSI (where the sculptural rocks and old pylons sit... if that makes any sense). I was sitting with a friend and remember last seeing the lens as I was switching it out for my supa zoom lens, when I was trying to capture the brilliant red breast of a hummingbird sitting upon a power line far, far away. I'm about 97% sure that's where I accidentally left it.

I'm only 34% sure that I may have left it at the Hawthorne food carts later in the day (around 5-ish).

Yeah... fingers crossed... but not too tightly. Karma? Please!

Many thanks... Phoenix

Pushing buttons [Mar. 20th, 2010|07:34 pm]

damnportlanders

[theotherjay]
A while ago, someone on this community (my apologies for not remembering better) was offering custom-made [info]damnportlanders buttons. I'd be interested in getting a couple, if there are any left, but I had another question as well: how might I go about making a custom design of my own? I understand that you print out your desired image on paper of a certain size, and use a press to squeeze it onto a button. Where can one find this hardware? Do you need to buy it, or can you go somewhere and rent it? I'm not looking to mass-produce, just for a few one-offs. Any ideas?

Sore Feet [Mar. 20th, 2010|05:48 pm]

[gaeba]
[mood |soresore]

I checked the back entries, but didn't find quite what I was looking for, so I'm throwing it out here...

Where do you go to get your feet pampered? I want both a pedicure and a massage (the massage especially).  In fact, if you know of a massage therapist who is good with feet, I'd love their name and number.  I've been to a couple of the massage therapists on the tag list, and the first one, I didn't realize, I had to specifically ask to have them massage my feet (she just sort of tapped them, and that was it)... and the second took about a minute per, that was it.

I hope you all got to get out and enjoy the nice weather today - thanks for your recommendations.

Lawrence Block recommendations? [Mar. 20th, 2010|05:00 pm]

bookshare

[claireleo]
Hi all,

Which books would you recommend by author Lawrence Block? His Wikipedia page is very detailed and I don't know where to start.

He has a Matthew Scudder series, Bernie Rhodenbarr series, Evan Tanner series, Chip Harrison series, a Keller series, and a Paul Kavanagh series -- not to mention his stand-alone novels!

Thanks for any suggestions!

I've got one of the 6' by 6' (20 cubbies total) Ikea Expedit bookshelves for sale. It's the dark brown/black color. Perfect shape. It's just way more storage than I need right now. $90 for a fellow DP'r. Here's the Craigslist ad...

Where can I...? [Mar. 20th, 2010|11:05 am]

[julip]
My friend and I want to sit outdoors and drink hard liquor while playing Scrabble. Name a good place for this activity! (I mean a place with waitstaff and decent bathrooms - not like a park.)

Close in PDX would be best but she lives in Vancouver so that would be somewhat acceptable as well.

cardboard? [Mar. 20th, 2010|10:16 am]

damnportlanders

[kengwen]
If I were looking for a largish supply of cardboard, for super cheap (free), where should I go?  I tried raiding the cardboard area of the nearby recycling center but it had apparently been collected recently.  I don't need "boxes" though that's what I've been looking for kind of by default.  Does Costco let you take boxes even if you're not buying things?  Or, do they have lots of broken-down boxes that they let people take?
(Kicking myself because just a couple weeks ago I saw half a dozen boxes full of other broken-down boxes somewhere I was and didn't think to grab them.)
hello, sunshine!  All my neighbors are out mowing and otherwise tending to their lawns/yards.

Vegetarian Tater Tot Casserole recipe? [Mar. 19th, 2010|09:56 pm]

damnportlanders

[cappyhead]
Since this seems to be the land of tater tots, does anyone have a Tater Tot Casserole recipe?  It doesn't have to be vegan (must include cheddar cheese!)  It looks like there are two kinds out there:  egg based and cream of mushroom soup based.  I've never made one myself, but I think it's time.

Thanks!

Last minute pet sitter? [Mar. 19th, 2010|08:51 pm]

damnportlanders

[bluecurlystraw]
I need a pet sitter for Saturday night, Sunday morning and evening and Monday morning, although Monday is negotiable.  SE, near the Aladdin Theater.  Please let me know of anyone who might be able to work on last minute notice.

More information:  3 cats, raw diet needs to be fed morning and evening.  Litter box scooping would be nice, but is optional.  I prefer a professional, licensed and insured.

Paper Drinking Straws? Wedding cake bakers? [Mar. 19th, 2010|07:33 pm]

damnportlanders

[smartasskicker]
1) i'm wondering if anyone has seen striped paper drinking straws for sale anywhere in town. they don't have to be the kikkerland brand like in the picture! i prefer red & white striped, but am interested in whatever you've seen. i'm not really interested in paying a bunch of shipping and having the color i get be a crapshoot, like it is if i buy them through the company.

ALSO...

2) we're looking for a cake baker for our july 4th wedding. our first choice (bakery bar) is full, and we trekked out to beaverton bakery for a tasting and were pretty disappointed. anyone have any particular suggestions?

thanks in advance!

Do you have boxes? [Mar. 19th, 2010|07:17 pm]

damnportlanders

[saiko_michiketa]
For those of you who are eager to discard your large/medium moving boxes, I would be happy to take them out of your hands. I live in the Woodlawn area.

Incidentally, where could I dig around for boxes in the NE? Are there bins in shopping districts I could rummage through? Any shops I could ask in particular?

Also, if you're in the SE area and you need boxes sometime after the 27th, you are welcome to take mine, lawl.

Thanks in advance!
